The Mabuiag Island Campus of Tagai State College is situated on Mabuiag Island (pronounced Mo-bee-ag), which is about 80km north of Thursday Island and about 16km north of Badu Island. The school itself runs along part of the beach known as Bau. This is a picturesque white sand beach that runs along the south eastern side of the island and down to a series of interesting reefs at low tide. The village is also situated along this beach. As travellers approach from the south, whether by sea or by air, they can clearly see the long white beach lined by coconut palms and houses.

With its close proximity to the sea, much of the school curriculum and many features of the school are related to the sea. Many of the students have a deep interest in fishing and many families are involved in the crayfish industry.

The staff of the school is enthusiastic and completely dedicated to improving each individual student’s achievement levels. There is a strong focus on individual and small group tuition and the extensive use of practical, hands-on activities to develop students’ knowledge. Students’ interests are used to guide the design and implementation of units of work.

The school is gradually developing a robust information and communication technology infrastructure. It has installed a fully networked computer lab of 15 computers that are all capable of providing access to the Internet and email. All classes use these computers to enhance the learning they are doing in their classrooms. A number of community members also make regular use of this facility. Each teacher has a computer in their classroom to assist them in researching, planning, recording information, analysing information and creating reports for parents and the school system. Interactive whiteboards are being progressively installed in the computer lab and the classrooms.

The school’s motto is ‘Seek Knowledge’. Our aim is to do all we can to put each student in the best possible position to seek knowledge throughout the rest of their life.
