sample image1Malu Os is a Cluster Special Education Unit. Malu Os supports students who have a disability and attend Tagai State College or Northern Peninsula Area College.
In 2007 Malu Os has 5.5 Advisory Teachers (ATs). The Head of Special Education Services (HOSES) and 3 ATs are based on Thursday Island (TI) and 1.5 teachers are based at Bamaga. Malu Os also support very young children who have a disability. Students can also receive support from our occupational therapist and physiotherapist who are based in Cairns and our speech language pathologist who is based on TI.

sample image2Malu Os has a beautiful new special education facility that is used by all children who attend the Thursday Island P-7 School. This facility has a kitchen, laundry, bathroom, offices and 2 large classrooms. All rooms are fully accessible for all children. The facility is used for classes and also for interagency professional development on the island.

sample image3Advisory Teachers work with staff, children and families at different campuses across Tagai State College and Northern Peninsula Area College ( a total of 20 campuses!)
Advisory Teachers assist staff to make adjustments for students with disabilities to access and participate in the Bound For Success Curriculum.

sample image6Staff are required to adjustments in the areas of Curriculum, Communication, Learning Environment and Access, Personal Care, Health and Safety and Social and Emotional Wellbeing. Heads of Campuses and the Head of Special Education Services (HOSES) of Malu Os are responsible for ensuring adjustments are being made, professional development is available for staff and the process is documented in each child’s Educational Adjustment Profile (EAP).

Malu Os staff assist schools to implement the 5 Point Plan that provides a systematic approach to ensuring that all campuses are making adjustments to cater for learning needs of children who have a conductive hearing loss.

1. The Adjustments being made for a child. The 6 key areas are Curriculum, Communication, Social and Emotional Wellbeing, Health and Safety, Personal Care and Learning Environment and Access

2. The frequency of the adjustments. Do they happen once a term, once a week, once a day or more often?

COMMUNICATION
