The Mer Campus of Tagai State College is one of the most isolated schools in Queensland. We believe it takes a whole community to raise a child. The school is located on Murray Island (approximately 200km north-east of Thursday Island). It is home to the Meriam people and the birthplace of the "Mabo High Court Challenge". English is spoken as a second language for most people or a third language for some. The island has about 500 people (approximately 30 non-islanders - contractors, teachers, nurses and their families). The Mer community has strong links with their cultural heritage. The community has an IBIS grocery store, AQIS/Immigration Office, Health Centre, Community Police Station, Council Office, Fish Freezer, eight Churches, a desalination plant, power station, Centrelink Agent and Canteen. Air flights are daily, except Sunday, and a barge visits once per week.

At the Mer Campus, we are growing a culture of high expectations for student success, with strategic decisions based on and guided by the Bound for Success policy. Despite our remote location, we are building an attitude of not expecting less or accepting less than what is expected and accepted down South.
