Tagai

The people throughout the Torres Strait are united by their connection to the stars of the Tagai. The Tagai consists of stories which are the cornerstone of Torres Strait Islanders' spiritual beliefs. These stories focus on the origins of these stars and identify Torres Strait Islanders as sea people who share a common way of life. The movements of Tagai across the sky instruct the world order, predicting new seasons and ensuring everything has a place.

TAGAI LIBRARIES FOR THE 21ST CENTURY
Creating “Resource & Virtual Learning Centres”

The Australian Government has proposed to provide Tagai State College with up to $12 million of large scale infrastructure funding under the “Primary Schools for the 21st Century” program. With these funds, Tagai State College intends to build an integrated web of libraries across all primary campuses, currently referred to as Campus Resources & Virtual Learning Centres.

What is a Campus Resource & Virtual Learning Centre?

It is proposed that each campus will have a Resources & Virtual Learning Centre on site. Whilst physically isolated, the centres will be virtually integrated - instantly linked to each other, and the rest of the world.

The centres will be purpose-designed to promote excellence in teaching and learning practice in Tagai State College.

They will focus on providing students, staff and local community members with on-site access to physical resources and virtual classrooms, specifically targeting the development of:

  • Fundamental literacy & numeracy skills
  • Torres Strait Language & Culture knowledge
  • Health & Wellbeing awareness
  • Positive parenting practices
  • Sharing of best teaching practice

Under the proposal, every Resource & Virtual Learning Centre will have:

  • the capacity to send and received electronic content
  • the capacity to interact via two-way video/audio transmissions similaniously
  • physical resource storage and management space

If you have any questions or comments, please do not hesitate to contact the Head of Campus in your community.
