Tagai

The people throughout the Torres Strait are united by their connection to the stars of the Tagai. The Tagai consists of stories which are the cornerstone of Torres Strait Islanders' spiritual beliefs. These stories focus on the origins of these stars and identify Torres Strait Islanders as sea people who share a common way of life. The movements of Tagai across the sky instruct the world order, predicting new seasons and ensuring everything has a place.

Seniors of 2008 - Set for Success

On Friday, 22nd February Tagai State College celebrated the induction of the 2008 Senior Class.

In front of peers, teachers and community, 65 students committed to meeting the challenges of their final year of schooling in order to achieve the College’s Service Guarantee of an OP and University enrolment, a clearly articulated training pathway or paid employment. The range and diversity of career aspirations identified by the group, (which included an Accountant, Professional Footballer, Business Manager, Pilot, Nurse & Teacher) indicated that this is likely to be the most successful year for Tagai State College.

Seniors of 2007, the first students to graduate from Tagai State College, have set a high benchmark for their 2008 counterparts. The number of 2007 Graduates that were awarded an OP was the highest proportion recorded by the school in 5 years. Four of these students were also awarded a VET certificate – an achievement never recorded in the Torres Strait.

The 2008 Senior cohort is on track to improve on these results once again. Approximately 19 students have been targeted as OP-Eligible.

This cohort will also be amongst the first students in Queensland to be eligible for a Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE). The QCE is a new qualification that replaces the traditional Senior Certificate.

It will record achievement in academic subjects, and workplace, vocational training, university and community endeavours such as sports coaching and first aid courses. Credit points will be allocated to each of these achievements, with students needing to acquire at least 20 credits to receive the certificate. They must also meet minimum literacy and numeracy standards.

For more information of the QCE, please contact Tagai State College Senior Campus.
