Thursday Island State High School was built in 1985 on the area known as Kaiwalagal, the traditional lands of the Kaurareg Nation. Students transition to the secondary campus from 16 outer and inner island schools and approximately 70 students board at two residential colleges on Thursday Island. The Secondary campus has a total student enrolment of 368 students with the majority being of Torres Strait Islander and/or Aboriginal descent whilst a very small percentage of students are from non Indigenous backgrounds. The Indigenous students speak a number of traditional languages and this great gift is valued within the school and embedded into the curriculum offerings.
The Secondary campus offers a co-educational service from Years 8-12 and works closely with the P&C Association to ensure a safe and supportive learning environment is provided for all students. The School employs 34 teachers to provide a service guaranteed of high quality teaching and learning to the students.
The School motto is "Strive to Excel" and this motto promotes High Expectations with learning and behaviour. The Secondary campus expects the best behaviour, best efforts and best attitudes to strive to excel.
Thursday Island Secondary Campus received a School of Excellence Award from which many programs and initiatives have been developed to achieve the following:
-
Increased number of students who achieve OP 1-15 eligibility
-
Increased number of students who complete Year 12 with a meaningful qualification, traineeship and apprenticeship towards full time employment.
The Bound for Success Education Strategy guides the development of the Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Framework for Tagai State College. This major curriculum reform together with organisational restructuring has drastically changed how our secondary campus delivers, monitors and assesses the teaching and learning processes. These changes will improve educational outcomes, improve retention rates to Year 12 and improve the student transition into employment or higher education.
We believe that our students can achieve; We believe that we have the best teachers to focus on good teaching and learning practices and we believe that we have parents and community supportive of students at school. We have all the essentials for navigating to a successful future.
