Program Description This program will provide you with an education degree with a view to being employed as a qualified Primary School teacher. The purpose of the program is to increase the number of registered Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander teachers available to teach in their communities. The RATEP program is offered at 19 sites around Queensland and is an initiative of Education Queensland, James Cook University and Tropical North Queensland Institute of TAFE. What you need to start The JCU bachelor of Education through RATEP is available to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people via a number of pathways:

JCU study is conducted at RATEP site by way of teleconferences with Townsville based Lecturers, CD ROMS, print materials, audio and video tapes, on site tutorials and workshops supported by RATEP teacher coordinators. TAFE study is undertaken at RATEP site in conjunction with Residentials and Away from Base activities conducted in Cairns and around Australia. The Academic Year RATEP courses commence each January and the term dates are based on the Education Queensland school calendar. Students may start studies in July also. Length of Course Completion of the one year Diploma in education course through TAFE RATEP credits students with one year of the four year Bachelor of Education degree at JCU. Fees The university component attracts fees from the Commonwealth Government's higher education Contribution Scheme (HECS). HECS payments may be payed 'up-front' each semester (which attracts a 25% discount) or in instalments through the taxation system when commencing paid work on completion of the course. Financial Assistance Abstudy The Commonwealth Government offers financial assistance to Indigenous tertiary students through Abstudy (this is means tested). Scholarships Students studying at the JCU RATEP level can apply for a number of scholarships. Applications Applications are availabel at RATEP sites. Interviews are usually held each October.
