As the most remote and often inaccessible school in the Torressample image1 Strait, Dauan Island Campus is situated in the top western region approximately 90 nautical miles from the nearest town of Thursday Island and 7 kilometres from New Guinea.
We offer quality education from pre prep to grade 7 for boys and girls and have a current enrolment of 51 students.
Our staff consists of a teaching principal, 3 teachers, four teacher aides, an AO2, a learning support tutor, groundsman and cleaner. Most of the auxiliary staff have lived on the island for many years and enrich the students learning environment.
Our schools vision of ‘linking solid traditions with future freedoms’ aligns with our ‘You Can Do It’ programme ensuring that our students achieve their full potential academically, physically and socially with a seamless transition to high school. Our students have to learn to adapt to changes but still remain traditionally aware of their surroundings and cultural practises.
We are guided by the principles of Bound for Success and firmly embrace the new Tagai College structure as a way forward for our students, enabling them to participate in the whole college moderated rich tasks that are now part of our curriculum.
We aim to challenge every child to be the best they can be through quality teaching and quality curriculum and the assistance of quality community members. We may be small but we’re really active.
As English is not our first language the main emphasis of our curriculum is literacy and numeracy experiences. We provide real life world experiences, coupled with high expectations, so our students are well prepared for the many future changes they will encounter as they have to leave the island.
