Our Campus is on the beautiful island of Poruma (Coconut), north east of Thursday Island in the central cluster of Torres Strait Islands.

The Poruma School has a vision that ‘Education Holds No Boundaries’. We have a consistent enrolment of between forty and forty-five students from Pre-Prep to Grade 7.

Located in Olandi St, the school was re-built in the late eighties and opened in 1987.The school consists of three well maintained buildings- offices, classrooms and a shower and toilet block. A new tuckshop is to be built in the near future.

On site we are fortunate to have a large oval, with large trees providing valuable shade at the western end, a half size basketball court, new adventure playground installed in 2006 and delightful tropical gardens, trimmed hedging and large leafy trees.

The staff accommodation consisting of a large principal’s residence, two modern duplexes and a school flat, are all adjacent to the school.

The teachers are committed to delivering the Bound for Success Curriculum and achieving the best possible educational outcomes for all students.

We have an active P&C Committee and supportive parents on Poruma who value the educational opportunities offered to their children and subsequently we have an attendance rate to be proud of.

The community and school have a history of working together to deliver many valuable partnership programs.
The community of Poruma respect their white sands, clean, clear water and reefs. Our Campus values the conservation and protection of the environment and we are proud to be a ‘Reef Guardian School’. The school and Environmental Health Team work together for ‘Tidy Beach Days’.

Culture is very much alive and strong at our school. The indigenous staff organise a weekly program of dance, song, drums and story telling, with all students participating enthusiastically. Many of the local indigenous community are involved in the teaching of important traditional skills to the students.
