District Touch Football Trials

A total of 84 girls from 15 schools and campuses from across the Torres Strait and NPA have taken part in four separate Touch Football Trials to choose the 12&U District Team to compete in the Peninsula Championships in Atherton later this month.
Cluster trials were held on Thursday Island, Boigu, Badu and Yam. Girls Touch Football was re-introduced last year to give the girls more representative opportunities as boys usually dominate rugby league and AFL teams. Last year’s team did exceptionally well at Peninsula, scoring 18 tries to 1 in the pool games and losing a close final. Two girls made it into the Peninsula Team.
Thank you to TSY&RSA for their support and to District Team coach Wally Shibasaki for making his way to all four events to conduct skills clinics and select the team. The team is - Narupay - Alion Guiga, Katherine Nawie, Jazmyn Wena, Rennear Shibasaki-Lee, Waybeni Buway: Ruth Neliman, Shanelle Jacob, Caroline David, Mabuygiw: Tamara Gizu,  Malu Kiyay: Simah Waireg and Kadhego: Rebecca Gigiba, Coach: Wally Shibasaki, Manager: Dave Bell and Female Supervisors: Jaman Waireg from Malu Kiyay and Lisa Nona from Narupay.
Thanks also to each of the four communities and campuses for hosting these events, the referees and supervisors and the coaches who trained the students for these events. Good luck in Atherton girls!
