Poruma Island is a narrow coral island bounded by shallow fringing coral reefs. It is approximately 1.4kms long with a width of about 400 metres.
The traditional language spoken is the Kulkalgal Ya.
Poruma Campus has a vision that “Education Holds No Boundaries". We have a consistent enrolment of around 30 students. Located on Olandi Street, the school was first opened in 1922 and was re-built in the late 1980's. The school consists of three well maintained buildings - an office, resource centre, three classrooms and an amenities block. In 2022 the school celebrated it's 100 year Centenary with a 3 day festival. The school has a teaching staff of one fulltime teacher and one teaching Head of Campus. It also has a Community Teacher and several ancillary staff. The school sits in a prime location in the centre of town with ocean views on both sides. The grounds are beautifully maintained and the school has a pleasant and calm atmosphere with all staff and students being proud learners who are respectful, responsible and safe.
Tidal encroachment in the 1930’s resulted in the emigration of many of the islanders to other islands.
