Kubin Community is one of two communities on Moa Island. It is located on the south side of the Island, close to the island’s only airstrip. Moa Island is the second largest island in the Torres Strait. Similar to surrounding islands, Moa is characterised by mounds of rock and is lightly vegetated and well-watered.

The dialect spoken on Kubin is Kawrareg dialect or Mabuyag dialect which are both part of the Kala Lagaw Ya traditional language.

Kubin is a community largely made up of people who have moved from Muralag (Prince of Wales Island) and other nearby Torres Strait Islands. They relocated in the early 1870’s, along with the survivors from Kiriri (Hammond Island) to Poid, on the south-western corner of Moa Island.
