Tagai TAFE is a joint initiative between Tagai State College and Tropical North Queensland (TNQ) TAFE and provides a new and innovative option for students in their senior phase of learning.

It allows students to complete their senior years of schooling, obtain a QLD Certificate of Education (QCE) and start a career in a chosen vocational area. Students are given the opportunity to gain “real world” skills by participating in work placements aligning with a certificated vocational qualifications and working with industry standard training, equipping them to take their place in the modern workforce.

Tagai TAFE aims to provide students with the skills needed to gain a head start in the workforce. This is achieved by placing a strong emphasis on Vocational Education and Training (VET) qualifications aligning with other school based subjects and on work placement and giving students every opportunity to secure an apprenticeship, traineeship or further VET qualifications while completing senior schooling.

Commencing a school based apprenticeship, traineeship and recognised VET Qualification under Tagai Tafe allows school subjects, such as Maths and English , to be timetabled around work placement and training, not competing with them.

Because of the dual outcomes of the Tagai TAFE program, students will be enrolled through both Tagai State College and TNQ TAFE.

Areas of VET Qualifications in 2010 include:

  • A range of Certificates I, II, and III
  • Areas of Construction, Engineering, Hospitality, Child Care Services, Business Administration, Information Technology, Art, and, Work Education.

The above senior schooling strategy builds on the established link between gaining employment and completion of VET qualifications. It also supports students in the proven likelihood of participating in further education and training after having already participated in the VET training pathways.
