Malu Kiyay campus was opened on 17 May 1989 and consists of low-set open plan design classrooms. Students and staff enjoy upgraded facilities including air-conditioning in all classrooms, the library and a Teacher and Reading Resource Room. There are new facilities on site including a two-bedroom teacher’s residence, Early Years Shed and a Ground Staff shed. The school has a large oval and students have access to a full size basketball court. The locality offers an exciting opportunity for our students as the Boigu Council have constructed a new multi-purpose sports stadium, which is located within 300m of the school. Malu Kiyay is building a strong reputation within the local community for pursuing improved and competitive academic performance and assuring the best in educational advice and service. The school climate revolves around high expectations and providing students with choices. This feeds into the school vision and key values of students being ‘Nurtured to their full Potential’.
The dialect spoken on Boigu is the Kalaw Kawaw Ya dialect which is a part of the Kala Lagaw Ya (KLY) traditional language.
Our school services the community of Boigu Island which is located approximately 4.5kms from the Papua New Guinea coastline. Malu Kiyay Campus also lays claim to being the ‘Top School in Australia’ due to our island being the most northern Australian community. Boigu is a large low lying island formed from alluvial mud deposited on decayed coral platforms by neighbouring PNG’s large river systems. There is sparse vegetation except for mangrove swamps. The entire island is subject to flooding except the village which is built on the highest point. The island is also very susceptible to the predicted sea level rises from the greenhouse effect.
